Profile

Alessandra Pecci is a Research Assistant with the Political Science Program. Her research interests span international relations (with a particular interest in the history, culture, and politics of the Middle East, South Asia, and Australia’s foreign policy), global governance (with a special interest in the United Nations system), and cross-cultural studies (in particular the role and initiatives of UNESCO in the ‘Dialogue of Civilizations’).

Alessandra joined the Political Science Program in August 2009 and is working on Professor John Dryzek’s Federation Fellowship project: Deliberative Global Governance, and more specifically a proposal for a Deliberative Global Citizen’s Assembly. The idea is to explore the prospects for a global assembly composed of more or less randomly selected participants, to be contrasted with existing proposals for a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA). Alessandra is also in the initial phase of exploring traditional approaches to governance and decision-making in different cultures and societies, in an attempt to determine whether deliberative capacity exists, and the extent to which it affects governance. In this context, Alessandra is currently investigating the concept of the Libyan 'Jamahiriya' ('state of the masses'), more specifically whether deliberation exists in the context of the 'participatory' approach to governance, whether and to what degree both tribal and bedouin traditions have informed or impacted on the evolution of the concept, and what possible implications this has for our, essentially Western-liberal, understanding of democracy, and of political community and organisation.
