Theory and Practice in Delibeative Democracy Workshop

Theory and Practice of Deliberative Democracy

2-Day Workshop

to be held at the Australian National University, Canberra

7-8 February 2008

Political Science Program

Deliberative Democracy Group

Deliberative democracy has been a key topic on the research agenda of many disciplines in social sciences. In addition to theoretical approaches, in recent years, there has also been a growing interest in the practice of deliberative democracy both in Australia and overseas. Given this, the workshop aims to cover both theoretical and empirical issues around deliberative democracy. It will focus on the normative principles of deliberative democracy, how these principle guide empirical research, different forms and arenas of deliberative practices, and their impact on individuals, societies and policies.

This initiative aims to bring together researchers from Australian universities working on the theory and practice of deliberative democracy and facilitate a collegial get together as well as a critical exchange. This workshop will provide us an opportunity to know more about each others works, approaches and experiences in the field of deliberative democracy in Australia.

Workshop Venue: Australian National University, Research School of Social Sciences, Coombs Building, Seminar Room A

Directions: The Coombs Building, building 9, is located on map CD32 at grid reference D2 and at map EF32 at grid reference E2. It is hexagonal in shape. Visitor parking is available.
